This is an easy, 15km, grade 2 family ride with nice river views. The trail meanderfs through pretty beach forest, regenerating Manuka & Kanuka, along the Tongariro River, one of New Zealand's finest trout fisheries.

Begin your ride from any of the public access points off Taupahi Road, Turangi and ride across the big swing bridge at Major Jones Pool. From there you can hang a left and ride up the hill to the lookout then we recommend returning the same route to carry on up the river. Don’t forget to look down for the trout. Best stop while you do though. We reckon its best to ride the east side up river then cross at Red Hut Pool on the big swing bridge and ride back downstream.

Just past Red Hut Bridge there are a few steps you’ll have to carry your bike up, but not too many! If you have time, park up and check out the National Trout Centre. It's fantastic and possibly the closest you'll ever get to a trout! 

After your ride there are some nice cafes in & around Turangi to enjoy a coffee or you could carry on to Tongairo National Park and enjoy any one of the beautiful short walks in the area.
